Learning Modes

Learning modes were formally known as "Course modes" and are used in a variety of areas throughout the LMS to filter courses and learning paths. One learning mode can be added to Course types or Course templates and Learning path types or Learning path templates; the ability to define at the template level is defined in the type level in the “Process complexity” tab.

The learning mode when added has no actual effect on courses and learning paths relating to the execution. Instead in a course or learning path the learning mode mainly serves as information to further identify the type of training; e.g. Classroom training, Online training, and Blended training. A typical vanilla configuration would have a matching learning mode for each course type and learning path type, but many customers configure many more such as Assessment sessions, Information sessions, webinars, forums, etc.

Where learning modes are really useful is in other functions as filter criteria; similar to Classifications in many ways. For example, Learning mode filters are available in:

  • Catalogue filters

  • Course searches

  • Some reports

  • Enrolment message trigger filter

  • Course notification filter

Hints and Tips

  • When creating a course or learning path the learning mode will inherit from the template and can't be changed; so ensure the learning mode is correct at the template level.

  • If updating the learning mode is not possible in the template level; likely the checkbox in the “Process complexity” tab of the type level is not ticked.
