Skill Assignments

Skills are assigned to learning paths, course templates, courses and resources, or used as prerequisites for course or learning path registration. They indicate a user's competence on a scale and determine registration prerequisites. Users gain further skills on completing courses.

Use for Learning Paths, Course Templates, and Courses

When a skill is added, the degree to which the activity is meant to improve the user's skill can be set. This can be selected as a named level of the skill's scale, since each level corresponds to a numeric range from 1 to 100, for example a level named Intermediate covering 26 to 50 points, or directly as a numeric interval, for example 30 to 75 points, where no matching level exists. Whether this selection is offered depends on the skill's settings, and whether it is mandatory depends on system settings.

An achieved skill can also lose value over time through attrition, based on a default attrition rate proposed by the skill, for example 10 points every 6 months. This default can be overridden with a diverging rule.

The meta tag "Update skills" determines if and when an achieved skill is awarded to the learner, for example on completing a course to which the skill was assigned. The "No evaluation" setting assigns the skill to the learner on completion without recording a specific level.

Use for Resources

For resources, the skill records the achieved ability of the resource, typically a tutor or trainer.

Use as Registration Prerequisite

For a registration prerequisite, the skill indicates the minimum ability required for registration.
